So many threads about this topic, new ones are being created almost daily with the same issue. So i'm making this thread to point out solutions for various causes of this problem.
No Power
-bad power cord
-bad power outlet
-bad casing power switch (swap with reset button connector to test)
PC powers on, but no display
remove all modules (vga, modem, lan card, hdd, etc), leaving only the PSU, memory and cpu plugged in the board. don't add another module until the pc boots up smoothly, with the hdd added last. Clean all slots to be used with a short burst from a contact cleaner spray, and let dry for a minute or two.
-check monitor connections
-swap memory module with a known good one
-reset BIOS
-swap video card
-clean vga and memory slots with a contact cleaner
-defective or incompatible keyboard
-defective motherboard. (last resort, wash with Joy liquid soap and rinse well. roaches, lizards, and mice sometimes gets in and pee on the board causing short circuits)
PC powers on with display, but shuts down immediately
-shorted or stuck up Power or Restart button
-defective PSU
-for defective LCD users, system unit is on but monitor only turns off. have the LCD monitor inverter circuit checked.
PC powers on with display, goes to Windows logon, then hangs or restarts.
-defective memory
-defective hdd
-wrong or corrupted device driver
-corrupted system files (do a chkdsk on another pc, or boot up from OS cd installer and do an hdd and system error check). may have been causes by a virus, so have it scanned from the 2nd pc (be careful not to have the other pc infected also. take precautions).
-run "repair Windows" in Windows setup
-cpu may be overheating (check bios hardware monitor for cpu temp. if near or over 70C, check your heatsink mounting and apply new heatsink compound)
-defective PSU
-defective accessory module (lan card, video card, etc)
-check all cooling fans, including vga card. may need cleaning and oiling.
